  • This is a Faculty A, 9-month (168 duty day) position.

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, benefited Faculty A, 3 level position. Starting salary range: $61,247.00 - $71,454.00/annually, depending upon experience.

Job Summary: Core responsibilities include:

The Instructor, Equine Studies and Activity Coach position is a full-time benefited position responsible for instruction and development of curriculum in the School of Business, Agriculture, and Technical Studies. As a member of the Equine Studies team, this position will work closely with the other faculty to build a robust curriculum for our students. In addition to the standard faculty duties this position is also responsible for the instruction, management, and coaching of an Equine Activity Team, please see the attached PD addendum for these related responsibilities.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions: – this position is Exempt , or  is not eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned.

Deliver quality instruction by preparing and implementing effective and inclusive teaching strategies and supportive learning activities.
• Provide student-centered instruction to maximize student engagement and success by facilitating applied learning experiences
• Implement effective classroom technologies and technology innovation in instructional practice by using a learning management system, agriculture technology, and other applications.
• Employ methods that develop student understanding of the values, practice, and procedures within a discipline

 

Provide service to the College by engaging in activities that support, stimulate and sustain the institution and community.
• Embody the values, ethics, and behavior codes of LCCC and within one’s discipline
• Actively contribute to the College and one’s Pathway, department, or discipline.
• Demonstrate effective communication in professional and academic venues
• Display commitment to the profession

 

Engage in professional development to maintain relevancy in field through research, publications, presentations, professional association memberships, and conference attendance.
• Engage in expanding institutional connections
• Engage in professional development
• Pursue continuing education and certification in teaching and the equine industry
• Maintain active membership in at least one professional organization relevant to equine, agriculture or education
• Seek new ways to integrate technology into the curriculum

 

Other tasks that may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.

• Assists in development of annual program budgets; and works closely with the program director on the development of annual school budgets when appropriate
• Assists in the design and implementation of academic programs aligned with current or emerging community, state, or national needs, as appropriate
• Advises student clubs or groups as appropriate
• Recruiting activities and efforts specific to equine programs and teams
• Assists the College in local, state, regional, or national projects and programs, board, or groups when appropriate
• Solicits feedback and implements suggestions from students and peers
• Keeps informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities
• As required, attends college, division, program, and professional trainings/meetings; may require overnight travel
• Provides Collegial assistance and mentoring for new faculty within discipline area, as needed
• Full participation in the Faculty Academy

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

All LCCC faculty are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the competency areas appropriate to their faculty level. In addition, requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position include the following:

  • Extensive demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities in colt starting, performance horse finishing, riding instruction, equine marketing, and the anatomy and physiology of the horse
  • Ability to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately when others express opinions, exhibit strong emotions and other difficult situations
  • Ability to manage all equine program support activities such as billing, collecting boarding fees, monthly communication with horse owners, veterinary care, and communicating paperwork requirements (brand inspections, veterinary inspections, Equine Studies Training Agreement, etc.) to owners prior to boarding a horse for the equine programs
  • Skill in appropriate teaching techniques and methods in classroom and/or online instruction
  • Ability to establish a student-instructor relationship conducive to learning, promote active involvement of students in learning activities and promote student retention
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to teach course content that is consistent with the official course outline of record and use pertinent course materials at an appropriate level
  • Working knowledge and ability with personal computing applications – specifically Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Adobe products (e.g., Reader, Professional), as well as database management systems
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including (but not limited to) personal computer and associated peripherals, fax machine, multi-line telephone, voice recorders, and other electronic devices
  • Ability to effectively and professionally execute the essential functions of this position with proven capabilities in establishing appropriate professional rapport, communicating with courtesy and tact, accurately determine others needs, collecting necessary information, and follow-through when requested
  • Ability to travel when necessary
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process) and consider possible applications of discipline related literature and publications

Physical/Mental Demands: 

  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of all employees, students, and donors
  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long work days, evenings, and weekends as needed
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, arena, stalls, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, climbing, kneeling, prolonged horseback riding, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds to perform essential position functions. Assisted lift technique is required for all lifts over 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds
  • Must be able to travel between the college external sites to facilitate coaching responsibilities
  • Function in an environment with substantial animal exposure and without any allergic reactions
  • Ability to drive for extended periods of time during day and night conditions

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Equine Studies, Agriculture, or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution
  • Two years of experience in equine training or related industry work
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the college’s insurance eligibility requirements
  • One year of instructional/teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to train horses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Equine Studies, Agriculture, or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience with web-based learning management systems
  • Willingness and ability to apply technology to problem solving in equine contexts
  • Two or more years of college-level teaching experience
  • Two or more years of work experience in an applied field
