This position is only available for LCCC students enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours/semester.

Job Summary: 

Core responsibilities of this position include:

The Student Assistant, Chemistry position for LCCC is a part-time, non-benefited student position that requires current enrollment as an LCCC student. Preference or priority screening may be given to student(s) that qualify for Federal Work Study eligibility. (Students may speak with the LCCC Student Hub and Financial Aid to determine if they are Federal Work Study eligible). This position is responsible for assisting the department with routine tasks and projects that support the day-to-day operations of the department. Under the direct supervision of program Faculty/and or LCCC Staff and in accordance with College policy and procedure, this position will assist with the inventory, organization, and disposal of program supplies, including chemical inventories and lab materials. Additionally, this position may facilitate responsibilities including, but not limited to clerical work such as filing, scanning, sorting, data entry, copying and delivering paperwork; assisting in preparing office materials; answering phones; providing general customer service; supporting special projects; and overall assisting the operational functions of the department. Individuals in this position are expected to represent the Department and LCCC in a professional manner and adhere to applicable policies and procedures.

Compensation: Minimum $14.32/hr.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions:  (to perform successfully in this position, an individual must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily as well as possess education/experience, employ the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed in representative fashion; reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions – this position is Non-Exempt, i.e., is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative; other duties may be assigned).

 

Program Inventory Functions: under the direct supervision of Faculty and while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment, this position will:

  • Become familiar with the MSDS online inventory system
  • Accurately inventory the Chemical storage room and other chemicals stored by the department
  • Organize the Chemical storage room as instructed and in accordance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • Assist in developing a procedure for maintaining accurate inventiories

Office Support Functions:

  • Support the department through clerical tasks such as filing, scanning, sorting, copying, delivering paperwork and completing general errands as needed
  • Assist department team members through preparing materials, monitoring supply inventories and assisting the operational functions of the department
  • Provide general customer service through answering phones, responding to visitors, and routing inquiries to the appropriate team member of the department
  • Support the department with special projects through completing tasks as assigned
  • Communicate and plan accordingly with the assigned supervisor to develop and establish a work schedule for the semester
  • Promptly communicate any changes to established schedules and seek advanced approval for known schedule conflicts or requests
  • Assist with data entry, maintenance of spreadsheets and creation of department flyers or communications.
  • Notify and elevate concerns to the appropriate supervisor regarding any issues, barriers, or concerns regarding task completion, customer concerns, or the general work environment

Nonessential Functions:  

An employee in this position may perform some of these responsibilities on an infrequent basis.

  • Cleaning and organization of the office and department areas
  • Attend and assist with department meetings and functions as needed
  • Attend applicable training sessions as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and ability with personal computing applications – specifically Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Adobe products (e.g., Reader, Professional), as well as database management systems
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality standards
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with area supervisor to resolve work and college course scheduling conflicts
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process)
  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate clearly with a variety of people, in one-to-one and small group settings – either face-to-face, by telephone, or by other electronic means
  • Ability to communicate in an informative manner and effectively listen
  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines and frequent interruptions
  • Ability to respond to basic inquiries from Faculty, staff, or other students
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including computer, copier, fax machine, and telephone

To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to:

  • work in a laboratory setting this includes working with laboratory equipment, manipulating instruments, and working with chemicals. Required personal protective equipment and safety procedures must be utilized at all times

·         Maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of employees, students, donors

  • Comply with highly inflexible deadlines; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • Adapt to a variable work schedule; including occasional evenings and weekends as needed

·         Interact with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions or may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations

·         Frequently move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities

  • Engage in multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor

·         Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; a team lift technique is required for lifts exceeding 50 pounds

·         Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus

  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds
  • Ability to effectively listen and perceive the nature of sounds and spoken words at normal speaking levels with or without correction
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Currently enrolled or previously completed a Chem 1020 or Chem 1030
  • Current LCCC student and continued enrollment in a minimum of 6 credits a semester, (exceptions may be given for summer term with supervisor approval)

Preferred: 

  • One year of experience in an office setting working with Microsoft Office Software. (Excel, Word, Etc.)
  • Federal Work Study eligible. Students may speak with the LCCC Student Hub and Financial Aid to determine if they are Federal Work Study eligible
