Job Summary: 

Core responsibilities of this position include:

The Mental Health Counselor is a 12-month full-time, benefitted, professional position responsible for providing personal counseling and program development for LCCC students. This individual is required to primarily work days; however, evening and weekend work can be expected.  This individual may provide on-call, after-hour support on an infrequent basis.

Compensation: The annual salary ranges from $44,000 to $51,000. Commensurate with experience and education.

Essential Functions

Personal/Group Counseling

  • Provide short-term, solution-focused individual, couple, and group counseling to LCCC students
  • Demonstrate interpersonal communication and rapport building with each encounter
  • Conduct and interpret mental health assessments
  • Assess individuals for mental, emotional, or substance abuse problems, including abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs
  • Develop treatment plans and manage crisis in accordance with assessment needs
  • Mediate and resolve conflict through de-escalation
  • Coordinate referrals for clients with significant mental health issues or needing long-term support to local community resources, following through to ensure service efficacy. Referral may include coordinating admittance to the local hospital for threat assessment
  • Make appropriate referrals to campus resources and services to promote student’s academic success

Crisis Intervention

  • Be responsive, available, and flexible to students experiencing mental health and emotional crisis
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling services to students experiencing mental and emotional distress including anxiety, stress, grief, trauma, and suicidal ideation
  • Assign follow-up to appropriate community mental health agencies
  • Provide information and referral support services to students, faculty, and/or staff as needed
  • Provide lethality assessment with corresponding documentation and coordinate appropriate level of intervention
  • Collaborate with the Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation Team (CARE Team) as needed and appropriate to support students in crisis and those who are exhibiting safety concerns

Advocacy

  • Provide advocacy services to complainants and respondents of the Title IX and Student Code of Conduct process
  • Inform students about and connect them with relevant and appropriate campus and community resources including Safehouse, SANE Nurse, Legal Aid, etc.
  • Assist students in understanding the Title IX and Student Code of Conduct process
  • Be apprised of local, regional, and national Title IX policies, procedures, protocols, and research

Office Management

  • Document client contact and treatment interventions using Titanium software in accordance with ACA Code of Ethics and CCW standards of practice
  • Document programming and student contacts to assist with data gathering
  • Maintain Outlook calendar to improve office functioning
  • Manage front desk duties on an as needed basis including scheduling appointments, providing intake paperwork and initial screenings, as well as, providing information to students regarding Disability Support Services and Dean of Students services
  • Collaborate with other College departments and assist in completing necessary forms, complying with college procedure, or requests to facilitate the operation of the CCW office

Consultation/Collaboration

  • Consult with supervisor regarding student cases, needs, and courses of action
  • Consult with CARE Team and other professionals while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and respecting student privacy
  • Provide consultation for LCCC employees for supporting students in the academic and/or student service areas
  • Partner with LCCC employees, including faculty, the Campus Activities Board, and Residence Hall to offer educational programming for students

Program Development

  • Support student peer mentors in clubs, organizations, leadership roles, and campus jobs to enhance their performance and effectiveness
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and assess comprehensive mental health and wellness programming and activities working in collaboration with other departments
  • Plan and implement passive and active educational programs, classroom presentations, counseling groups and training seminars to improve mental and emotional wellness
  • Be aware of issues and trends for national, regional, and local college populations, higher education, assessment and current therapeutic practices in order to provide intentional and data-informed programs

Campus/Community Outreach

  • Educate campus community members and students about mental or physical illness, abuse, medication, or available community resources
  • Increase community agencies’ awareness of CCW services and student body needs
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community agencies and providers
  • Provide education to College Success classes regarding counseling services, stress management, and other relevant course topics
  • Integrate counseling and campus wellness services and institutional training strategically by collaborating and/or training efforts in order to provide and support the needs of faculty and staff within the LCCC organizational needs

Professional Development

  • Increase professional knowledge and maintain professional licensure requirements in accordance with the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board by completing required continuing education credits and reviewing current literature, conducting social research, or attending seminars, training workshops, or classes

Professional Conduct

  • Abide by the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics and Wyoming State Statutes when providing services, documenting services, and interacting with professionals and students
  • Adhere to the Counseling and Campus Wellness Standard of Practice
  • Inform constituents of the nature of CCW services by reviewing the CCW Disclosure Statement

Nonessential Functions:  

An employee in this position may perform some of these responsibilities on an infrequent basis

  • Grant writing/administration
  • Serve as a CCW liaison for the CARE Team secondary to the Coordinator
  • Manage and update Counseling and Campus Wellness website as needed
  • Respond to after-hour, on-call requests secondary to the Coordinator of Counseling and Campus Wellness
  • Attend and support program, department, division and College meetings; functions; and events

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Contemporary knowledge of Counseling, student development theories principles and practices, human development theories, and solution-focused theory
  • Comprehensive knowledge of available college and community resources
  • Knowledge of relevant college policies, procedures and practices with the ability to answer questions and/or interpret and apply these policies and procedures correctly in various situations
  • Knowledge of effective customer service techniques with the ability to present one’s self and the college in a positive and professional manner
  • Knowledge and skills to operate a wide variety of standard office equipment (computers, printers, telephone, fax, copy machines, etc.)
  • The ability to utilize Microsoft Office products for day-to-day operations
  • The ability to navigate Student Information Systems, specifically Colleague, EaglesEye, and Learning Management System
  • The ability to make independent judgments, work autonomously, and demonstrate initiative
  • The ability to react calmly and act professionally in emergency or high conflict situations
  • The ability to provide individual and group counseling for students
  • The ability to provide training and programming for students and LCCC employees
  • The ability to apply problem solving skills in order to effectively resolve conflict and manage crisis
  • The ability to manage situations involving various psychological, emotional, medical or safety related emergencies or incidents
  • The ability to remain calm in crisis situations with high levels of emotional distress and to communicate and seek out effective self-care opportunities
  • The ability to assess individuals for mental, emotional, or substance abuse problems, including abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs
  • The ability to appropriately manage access to confidential information requiring considerable judgment and discretion
  • The ability to maintain strict confidentiality and secure records maintenance
  • The ability to work effectively with a team while building healthy working relationships
  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally to advocate for counseling and student needs
  • The ability to speak in public settings in front of large groups of students and employees

Physical/Mental Demands: 

  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of employees, students, donors
  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long work days, evenings, and weekends as needed
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds to perform essential position functions
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family Counseling, or related equivalent degree (with an emphasis or experience in Student Personnel services or Higher Education)
  • Two years directly related experience providing counseling
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for professional licensure through the State of Wyoming Mental Health Professional Licensing Board (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or equivalent licensure)
  • Provisional licensure will not be considered at this time

 

Preferred:

  • One year experience in a Higher Education setting
  • One year experience providing outreach and student programming services
