This is a grant funded, part-time position. Hours will vary depending on need, typically 4-18 hours per week. 

 

Job Summary:

Provide support services to GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) students throughout the Albany County School District #1 or Laramie County School District #1 and/or LCSD #2 junior high and high schools. Liaisons assist the Coordinators in administering grant services at partner schools, including recruiting students; and data collection of GEAR UP students in their building (such as transcripts and attendance data). This position is part-time position and work load will vary depending on need.

 

Compensation: $10.27 per hour, commensurate with experience.

 

Screening Date: Position is open until filled.

 

Start Date: As soon after screening as practical.

 

Essential Functions

  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to assist Coordinator with collecting student data from the school district: Free and Reduced lunch status; Transcripts/Grades; Attendance records
  • Assist with the identification and enrollment of GEAR UP students:  Collect enrollment forms; Mail initial parent student letters; Send out passes to excuse students from class
  • Fill out relevant paperwork as needed if meeting with students or parents
  • Make referrals to other supportive services as necessary
  • Attend GEAR UP events, trainings, and field trips as required of the position
  • Coordinate tutoring and other student needs with school liaisons, teachers, parents and GEAR UP staff
  • Adhere to GEAR UP grant and school district policy and procedures

 

Nonessential Functions:  

An employee in this position may perform some of these responsibilities on an infrequent basis.

  • Provide written documentation of attendance/activity
  • Assist Coordinator with supervising youth as a chaperone at GEAR UP events (if desired)
  • Monitor and correct behavior and discipline per GEAR UP guidelines as needed

  • Ability to relate to students, parents, and school employees 
  • Knowledge and use of linguistic flexibility (active listening, explaining, evaluating, etc.)
  • Strong verbal interpersonal communication skills in order to effectively work with students, parents and school staff and GEAR UP staff
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, ability to multi-task
  • Enthusiasm, patience, persistence, and adaptability
  • Proactive and assertive with ability to use positive motivation; a ‘self-starter’
  • Team player who is professional, responsible, college-focused, and flexible
  • Awareness and sensitivity to legalities of working with minors in a school setting

 

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the assigned school(s)
  • An employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to sit through enrollment sessions; capable of transporting (carrying) all course related materials for enrolling students (applications, food, etc)
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple tasks and perform varying levels of academic functions while maintaining awareness of student activities going on during tutoring sessions
  • The noise level in the work environment would vary based on physical placement of tutoring, time tutoring takes place with respect to class times, and the number of students present

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education - At least a High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience – must currently work in the Albany County School District #1 or Laramie Conty School District #1 or #2
  • An understanding of the skills necessary for educational success
