    This is a part-time position. Variable hours, up to 19 hours per week.

    Job Summary:

    Tutors provide academic support to GEAR UP students throughout the Albany County School District #1 or Laramie County School District #1 and/or LCSD #2 junior high and high schools. Tutors facilitate tutees’ understanding the course content and its applications to and implications for tutee’s lives.  Tutors provide academic direction by modeling effective learning and study strategies and facilitating independent, competent student behaviors.  All tutoring is conducted in a structured and supervised environment.


    Compensation: Minimum $10.27/hr. Commensurate with education and experience.


    Screening Date: Position is open until filled.


    Start Date: As soon after screening as practical.


    Essential Functions

    Academic Support:

    • Provide Academic support to students at secondary schools, including but not limited to homework assistance, editing papers and other projects, brainstorming ideas for relevant classroom assignments, and creating and implementing study techniques
    • Maintain consistent contact with students in relation to student needs
    • Empower students to develop responsibility for their own learning
    • Create a college-going culture among student participants and promote knowledge of college processes and requirements
    • Monitor and correct student behavior per GEAR UP guidelines as needed

    Communication, Reporting, and Confidentiality:

    • Maintain appropriate sign-ins and reports of student contacts in accordance with GEAR UP grant policies
    • Communicate with all school personnel and GEAR UP staff regarding student progress, school policies, and other pertinent information
    • Maintain confidentiality in regards to all student paperwork, contact and participation
    • Comply with legalities of working with minors in school settings, including complying with mandatory reporting guidelines

    Professional Development:

    • Obtain occasional training on topics such as academic coaching, tutoring models and methods, and college-required training

    Nonessential Functions:  

    • An employee in this position may perform some of these responsibilities on an infrequent basis
    • Assist Coordinators in creating GEAR UP Academic Plans with students, as required by GEAR UP’s mission, including discussing financial aid and rigorous academic opportunities
    • Assist with occasional night and weekend events
    • Chaperone students on day and overnight trips
    • Transport students to and from events according to LCCC and GEAR UP policies when needed
    • Provide advanced notice to GEAR UP office staff when scheduled tutoring must be canceled

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Subject matter knowledge in core subjects at the secondary level
    • General knowledge of college environments and expectations
    • Knowledge of learning styles and strategies
    • Strong social skills and ability to relate to junior high and high school students
    • Active listening skills
    • Ability to manage behavioral expectations and issues that arise in tutoring settings
    • Ability to communicate with a diverse population (age levels, backgrounds, etc.) via multiple methods (in-person, telephone, virtual)
    • Ability to be flexible in scheduling
    • Ability to learn and follow mandatory reporting guidelines
    • Must be able to maintain confidentiality in regards to all students contact and information
    • Ability to maintain accuracy and meet deadlines with reporting and other requirements 

    Physical/Mental Demands: 

    • An employee performing the essential duties of this position may encounter strong opinions and strong emotions from the population which they serve and will need to respond in a professional and diplomatic manner in such situations
    • An employee will need to maintain appropriate confidentiality in regards to student information and participation
    • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate. However, some instances of loud noises may occur
    • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions
    • This position will require occasional travel to trainings and events
    • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
    • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee may be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time and/or to move around the assigned tutoring space
    • An employee may need to occasionally lift or move items up to 30 lbs.



    • High school diploma or equivalent. Must be 18 years of age or older


    • Some college experience
    • Previous experience as a tutor is preferred
    • Previous experience with the course(s) to be tutored is preferred
